The town of Nerja is about 50km to the east of Málaga on the Mediterranean coast. It lies at the foot of the Almijara mountains which help to provide a mild and pleasant climate all year round. San Juan de Capistrano is a mature development of villas and apartments in the north part of the town, just where the mountains begin. The apartment is at the top of the development backing onto the mountains to the north with views over the town to the south.
This is a mature development of villas and apartments either let out to holidaymakers or lived in by the owners. It is attractively laid out with beautiful sub-tropical gardens kept in superb condition by a team of gardeners. There is a large swimming pool available to guests from the beginning of April until the end of October. It has a sloping shallow end which is fun for children and there is also a small pool for toddlers. There are bar/restaurants around the pool and a supermarket where you can get all you need for self catering. San Juan de Capistrano was built at the top of the town of Nerja on the slopes of the Almijara mountains. There is a half hourly bus service from the village to the town centre 2.5 km away.
19 Capuchinos is right at the top of San Juan and accessed by steps from the Calle Capuchinos access road where there is car parking. The apartment backs directly onto the lower slopes of the pine clad mountains and so is quiet and secluded even in high season. It is quite safe for children as long as they can manage the steps. It is not suitable for people who would have difficulties climbing a number of flights of steps. However this area is ideal for walkers - one mountain path starts 50 metres from the apartment.
Nerja
This is a small seaside town with superb beaches and cliff walks. This part of Spain claims to have the best climate in Europe and, not surprisingly, is popular with tourists from all over the world in the summer. However the town retains a character typical of this part of Andalucia with a strong Moorish influence in the design and decoration of the houses. There is still a great deal of agriculture and fishing in the area and you will see local fishermen selling off barrows in the streets and farmers still using horse-drawn ploughs. They will often bring produce down from their small farms and sell it in the streets. The focal point of town is the " Balcon de Europa" which juts into the sea and is a gathering place for tourists and locals. All the streets leading off are colourful and lively. There are many good beaches in and around Nerja with fish restaurants on the beach or nearby. Don't miss the paellas cooked over open fires and barbecued fish you can get on Burriana beach. There are also plenty of international restaurants if you want a change from Spanish food. The town is backed by an impressive mountain range which is protected from development and is superb for walking. Nerja is within an hour and a half by car from the beautiful city of Granada with the historic Alhambra.
The apartment has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. There is a bathroom and an open plan area with the kitchen through an arch at one end, a lounge area in the middle with a fireplace and seating for 4 and a dining area at the other end with seating for 6. The kitchen is fully equipped including a refigerator, washing machine, ceramic hob and microwave oven with grill. Outside there is a large terrace with balcony giving sweeping views to the south, over the village of San Juan de Capistrano to Nerja and the Mediterranean. The terrace has a built-in barbecue and an eating area with table and chairs.
The property is looked after by a management company with offices in Capistrano village called Lesagro. They hold the keys and arrange for cleaning and laundry. Any problems you may have with the property while you are there can be sorted out by Lesagro. Lesagro can also provide car hire, airport transport, cot, baby sitting etc. You can contact Lesagro by telephone (0034) 952524800 or e-mail lesagro@infonegocio.com
Most people fly to Malaga airport and pick up a hire car. The journey to Nerja takes about an hour. When you pick up a hire car they will ask for a returnable deposit (which you can put on your credit card) and the address you will be staying. This will be "Capuchinos 19, San Juan de Capistrano, Nerja 29780". From Malaga airport take the motorway to the east - look out for signs to Motril or Almeria. The motorway goes all the way to Nerja. As Capistrano lies to the east of the town it is best not to take the first turn to Nerja which takes you into the west of the town. Carry on along the motorway, through the Capistrano tunnel and then turn off the other side of the tunnel - this turn is marked up for Maro and the Nerja caves (cuevas de Nerja). Follow the signs to Nerja from the roundabout and continue to the outskirts of the town. If you are driving from the east (e.g. from Almeria or Granada) you need to take the first exit to Nerja.
As you approach Nerja you will see a sign to Capistrano Oasis which you don't want, and then to Capistrano village to the right just after the big brown Nerja sign. Lesagro's offices where you pick up the key are in Capistrano village - see the map. Lesagro will give you a map showing how to get to the apartment. This link to google maps also shows where Calle Capuchinos is. Note that the motorway shown actually runs in a tunnel under the mountain and you can't hear or see it from the apartment.
The keys would normally be held in Lesagro's offices in Capistrano village - or at the desk of their associated company Latitud-7. Should you need to contact Lesagro because of flight problems etc. their telephone number is (0034) 952524800. They are there to help! If you arrive out of office hours you can use the keys in the secure keybox by the front door. Ask me for the combination before you go.
If you are arriving late and are making directly for the apartment then you don't need to go into Capistrano Village. Turn right at the second roundabout after the brown sign (just the other side of a football pitch and skateboard park. Follow the road round to the right and up through the Los Poetas barrio. Follow the road to the right and San Juan de Capistrano is on your left (see route marked on map). To get to 19 Capuchinos see this more detailed map.
